ANTENA 3 COMPLAINT IN THE PUBLIC MIRROR PROGRAM THE LACK OF CHARGERS

The lack of car charging stations in Spain is becoming an increasingly critical issue as the country moves toward more sustainable mobility solutions, especially with the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs). While Spain has made strides in promoting electric vehicles and reducing its carbon footprint, the infrastructure to support EVs, particularly the number of charging stations, has not kept up with demand. This gap is a major barrier to the widespread adoption of electric cars, especially for people who rely on them for daily commuting or long-distance travel.

In many urban areas, there are some charging points available, but they tend to be concentrated in specific regions, often in larger cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Rural areas, smaller towns, and less-populated regions, however, face a significant shortage of these stations, making it difficult for EV owners to travel long distances or even use their vehicles reliably in these areas. This is a problem not only for private car owners but also for businesses and logistics companies that are looking to transition to electric fleets.

Another challenge is the availability of fast-charging stations. While slow chargers are more common, they can take several hours to fully charge a vehicle, which is impractical for those needing to get back on the road quickly. Fast chargers are limited, and their distribution remains uneven, further complicating the situation. Many EV owners also report frustration with charging points that are often occupied, broken, or poorly maintained, which reduces confidence in the existing infrastructure.
